Jean Vernon

As long as I can remember, my grandmother has been a remarkable example of volunteerism and giving back to your community. Winston Churchill said, “you make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.” If that is true, Jean Vernon has lived a very full life.

A lot of Jean’s volunteer work is to help improve the lives of the seniors of Caswell County. She serves on the Caswell County Adult Advisory and Senior Center committees, delivers Meals on Wheels weekly, regularly visits retirement homes, and hosts a senior lunch at her family cabin.

When she isn’t helping the seniors in her community, she can often be found at her church. If you’ve attended New Hope UMC in Milton, you know about the sweet rolls she bakes every Sunday before she teaches the youth Sunday school classes.

Her work doesn’t stop there. She is also a member of the Semora Ruritan Club, a regular volunteer at the Caswell County Local Foods Council’s monthly community lunch, and a supporter of Community Foundation of the Dan River Region and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

While Jean Vernon has worked tirelessly to support the many programs and nonprofits close to her over the years, she hasn’t let that stop her from being a supportive friend, neighbor, and family member. She always makes time for the people in her life as well - joining her grandchildren for lunch at school, making meals for people when they’re unable, and doing whatever she can to improve the lives of those around her. I am proud to call her my grandmother and nominate her for Volunteer of the Year.
